What to do right now

  1. Stop running water into it

Stop running water into the blocked drain. If it is a toilet, don't keep flushing.

  2. One fixture, or the floor drain?

EPCOR treats a plugged sink, tub, floor drain or toilet that flushes poorly as an internal problem. If only one fixture is affected, EPCOR says you need a plumber. If water comes up through the floor drain, EPCOR says your sewer service line may be plugged: see sewer backup and call EPCOR at 780-412-4500.

  3. Never mix drain cleaners

Never mix drain cleaners. If you used one, tell the pro before they start. Health Canada says never to mix household chemical products, because some mixtures give off harmful gases.

  4. Sink clog? Look to the P-trap

EPCOR says plugged sinks are typically blocked in the drain pipe, often in the P-trap, the U-shaped bend under the sink.

  5. Floor drain coming up? Treat it as a sewer backup

Water or sewage rising through a floor drain is a sewer backup. Keep people and pets away, stop using water, and follow the sewer backup steps.

For its own service, EPCOR draws a line: a problem isolated to one fixture is yours to fix, with a plumber. EPCOR also warns that a plugged fixture can be a sign of a bigger issue, like grease, wipes or tree roots building up deeper in your sewer line.

Clogged main drain or clogged drain in basement floor

When the sewer service is plugged, EPCOR says water can back up through the floor drain. That is the point to stop using water and call EPCOR at 780-412-4500.

Sewer and drain cleaning, Edmonton: who pays for what

EPCOR is responsible for the sewer pipe from your property line to the main. The line on your property, and every drain inside, is the homeowner's.

EPCOR's fees for sewer obstruction service are $410 for the first investigation, $220 for each later visit, and $255 to remove the obstruction. A prohibited-waste blockage brings a fee wherever it is. A private plumber can do the same work, but EPCOR won't reimburse a plumber's fees.

Questions

Why does my drain keep clogging?

A drain that keeps clogging can point to a buildup further down the line. EPCOR names grease, wipes and tree roots as things that build up deeper in the sewer line.

Can clogged drains make you sick?

Sewage that backs up into the house is the concern. CMHC's advice is to keep children, pregnant women and people with respiratory problems away from contaminated water.

How do I know if a drain is blocked?

Water drains slowly or stands in the sink or tub, or the toilet flushes poorly. EPCOR treats those as internal problems for a plumber. Water coming up through the floor drain points to the sewer line instead.
